In this reading we are introduced to Zerubbabel – a descendant of King David, who would see to the rebuilding of the temple, but who was NOT ruling as king. But here we see God encouraging His people not to despise the day of small things, for the mountains would be removed – but not in the strength of Zerubbabel or the people, but by God’s Spirit.
